The two images represent the preparations of Qingming Jie, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, in two different forms. In many ways, this ritual is a way to respect ancestors and receive their blessings for the following year.
The first image is Mr. Panda kneeling on the green grass, praying his respects to his ancestors at their gravestone and holding three joss sticks. The sky is cloudy and blue because during this time, it is often followed by three days of rain. A panda is chosen instead of a realistic person because a panda is an important animal symbolizing China.
The second image is Mr. Panda preparing his ancestors’ favorite dishes at home. The table is filled with many dishes, and two candles are lit. On the table, there is a plate of bright and fresh oranges. Mr. Panda is bringing a plate of three red apples to the table. In the background, there is a window looking out to the blue, cloudy sky.
