Día de los Muertos in the United States
This still image shows a finished altar, called an ofrenda, an important aspect of Dia De Los Muertos. On the alter are five different photos: four photos are loved ones of the Fernandez-Martinez family and Mancillas family. Including in the alter is a photo (center) of the family dog, who passed away two years before. The altar is filled with food such as bananas and pan de Muertos (Bread of the Dead), mirroring each other, and a variety of dog treats all to represent favorite foods of those on the altar. The altar is decorated with Cempasuchil flowers, Aztec Marigolds, in the background, which are accompanied by lit candles on each side. Other decorations include color banners above and, on the altar, a sugar skull, and pumpkins to match the Mexican tradition and fall season.
