The article describes that these problems are increasing the temperature of rivers and lakes in the Middle West water table and causing the environment to be unlivable for trout. The author points out that while discussion of repopulating rivers and lakes takes place, the main issue is not being addressed, which is, “what use to plant fish in streams and lakes, if water conditions are untenable?” (Smith). He tells a story about the river he fished at when he was younger and how the water has become untenable because of deforestation. He proposes an effort called the reforestation program. This effort essentially takes trees from land that is not used for agriculture, and places them in “barrens” of Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.
